29 year old Starting Pitcher Martin Perez has agreed to a 1-Year, $4.5 million dollar contract with the Boston Red Sox, as originally reported by Ken Rosenthal. The deal also includes a $6 million club option with a $500K buyout. The Red Sox had denied the previous club option on Perez’s contract, which was for $6.85 million.

Perez, a longtime pitcher for the Texas Rangers, spent last year with the Red Sox where he made 12 starts. In those starts, the Venezuelan born player posted a 3–5 record with a 4.50 ERA and a WAR of 1.1 during the shortened season. It was the best ERA that Perez had posted since his 2016 season with the Rangers. Lifetime, Perez has pitched 988.2 innings, posting a 56–61 record with a 4.71 ERA, 643 strikeouts and a WAR of 6.9.

Perez will likely find himself in Boston’s starting rotation again this year. The Red Sox posted a 24–36 record during the shortened 2020 season, finishing last as they continue their slide since their 2018 World Series championship.
